Tyre Size Guide
Every tyre has its size moulded into the sidewall, usually as a code such as 205/55 R16 91V. Knowing how to read that code means you can order the right replacement tyres first time. This tyre size guide explains each part of the code, with a quick-reference tyre size chart for load index and speed rating.
How to read your tyre size
Using 205/55 R16 91V as an example:
| Part | Example | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Width | 205 | Tyre width in millimetres, sidewall to sidewall |
| Profile (aspect ratio) | 55 | Sidewall height as a percentage of the width (55% of 205mm) |
| Construction | R | Radial construction, used on almost all modern car tyres |
| Rim diameter | 16 | The wheel size the tyre fits, in inches |
| Load index | 91 | The maximum load each tyre can carry (91 = 615kg) |
| Speed rating | V | The maximum speed the tyre is rated for (V = 149mph) |
You may also see extra markings: XL or Reinforced means a higher load capacity, C after the rim size (for example R16C) marks a commercial van tyre, and M+S indicates mud and snow capability.
